«The novel takes place in an unnamed Spanish ‘new town’ in the countryside, far away from the capital (we assume Madrid) and far away from everything, started by a swashbuckling developer during the building boom of the 1990s but abandoned, only partly completed, as a result of the economic crash of 2008. Intended as a sparkling new beginning for thousands of new owners of all incomes and social backgrounds, in the present day of this novel the new town and residential housing are hollow shells of an extravagant dream. Today, precisely 262 residents inhabit the modern, well-appointed villas with their manicured gardens. The vacant, unfinished housing blocks just streets away are inhabited by rats, fugitives, criminals, squatters, settlers, illegals, losers – they are given many names.»
